چکیده

In this paper, we study the distribution network design problem integrating transportation and infinite horizon multiechelon inventory cost function. We consider the trade-off between inventory cost, direct shipment cost, and facility location cost in such a system. The problem is to determine how many warehouses to set up, where to locate them, how to serve the retailers using these warehouses, and to determine the optimal inventory policies for the warehouses and retailers. The objective is to minimize the total multiechelon inventory, transportation, and facility location costs. To the best of our knowledge, none of the papers in the area of distribution network design has explicitly addressed the issues of the 2-echelon inventory cost function arising from coordination of replenishment activities between the warehouses and the retailers. We structure this problem as a set-partitioning integer-programming model and solve it using column generation. The pricing subproblem that arises from the column generation algorithm gives rise to a new class of the submodular function minimization problem. We show that this pricing subproblem can be solved in O n logn time, where n is the number of retailers. Computational results show that the moderate size distribution network design problem can be solved efficiently via this approach.

Vendor Managed Inventory of a Single-vendor Multiple-retailer Single-warehouse Supply Chain under Stochastic Demands

In this study, a vendor-managed inventory model is developed for a single-vendor multiple-retailer single-warehouse (SV-MR-SV) supply chain problem based on the economic order quantity in which demands are stochastic and follow a uniform probability distribution. In order to reduce holding costs and to help balanced on-hand inventory cost between the vendor and the retailers, it is assumed that...

Two-level supply chain for a deteriorating item with stock and promotional cost dependent demand under shortages

In this research work, a wholesaler-retailer-customer supply chain model for a deteriorating item is considered, where the retailer's warehouse in the market place has a limited capacity. The retailer can rent an additional warehouse (rented warehouse) if needed, with a higher rent compared to the existing warehouse (own warehouse). The customers' demand of the item is linearly influenced by th...

Model and Algorithm for the Vendor-Warehouse Transportation and Inventory Problem in a Three-Level Distribution System

We consider the inventory-routing problem in a three-level distribution system with a single vendor, a single warehouse and many geographically dispersed retailers. In this problem, each retailer faces a demand at a deterministic, retailer-specific rate. The demand of each retailer is replenished either from the warehouse by a small vehicle or from the vendor bypassing the warehouse by a big ve...

Two-warehouse system for non-instantaneous deterioration products with promotional effort and inflation over a finite time horizon

In the current global market, organizations use many promotional tools to increase their sales. One such tool is sales teams’ initiatives or promotional policies, i.e., free gifts, discounts, packaging, etc. This phenomenon motivates the retailer/or buyer to order a large inventory lot so as to take full benefit of promotional policies. In view of this the present paper considers a two-warehous...

A logistics network design model with vendor managed inventory

In this paper, we study a logistics network design problem with vendor managed inventory in which the company is in charge of managing inventory for its downstream warehouses and retailers, and can choose whether to satisfy each retailer’s demand. The problem incorporates the location, transportation, pricing, and warehouse-retailer echelon inventory replenishment decisions. Traditionally, thes...

Approximation Algorithms for the Single-Warehouse Multi-Retailer Problem With Piecewise Linear Cost Structures1

Recently, Chan et al. (2000) proposed an efficient heuristic for a class of finite time planning horizon single-warehouse multi-retailer system with complex (nonlinear) transportation cost structures. Their heuristic is based on solving a large LP relaxation of the underlying problem. In this paper, we analyze the strength of the proposed LP relaxation and show that it attains the best theoreti...
